Behind the Black Wall
the split of the net
2024-02-07
The independent tech journalists at 404 Media are having an issue being discoverable on the internet. The Hairpin is now an AI clickbait farm. The big social media sites no longer show you what you want to follow. Google search results are garbage.
Meanwhile there's the selfhosted fediverse, the indie web, people are going to private group chats or texts. I'm on a private mailing list and IRC (hey group!)
I've been playing Cyberpunk 2077. (You may have noticed the stop of new game a day. My resolution was nothing new, I already own Cyberpunk. The resolution wasn't the game a day.) I've mostly been playing out of disappointment of Starfield which I bought when it first came out.
In the game, rogue AIs roam the net. To protect against them, the net was separated by a firewall called the Black Wall. The normal net people can use on one side, AIs running around on the other. (I have the same criticism here as I made before about the concern people have for AIs around right now, that they could be dangerous. Then just turn off the computers! These concerns often come from the AI makers themselves, which just makes me think it's criti-hype. "Our product is so good it's dangerous!")
This separation of the net could be seen with the big tech net and the indie web. Heck, the big tech net even has AIs interacting - AI generated SEO only meant to be read by search engine bots to rank those sites higher.
Unfortunately the "regular" indie web is mostly for the tech savvy, where everyone else has to use the big tech net to have any success.
How do we fix this? I don't know. I'm just going to keep posting from my little corner on this side of the net.
